Writer's Group

In the month of May, I've got 5 days without children's sports. Four of those are Memorial Day weekend, when many of the folks in the Mitten take off for parts north. The other was today. While I would've loved to stay home, I set out early to attend a writer's group meeting.

I know. If you're a writer-type, you may hate this idea. For me, this easy-going group is an encouragement to continue to write, even when it's hard to find time. The group gives good critiques, improving my craft. We read books on writing, building up our determination and stamina. We swap ideas and experiences.

It's great to be a part of a community of writers. For me, it's worth the time.

When life gets busy, how do you take the time to invest in bigger communities? How do you develop your skills? Do share your ideas!

  1. Attending lectures by successful authors at our local libraries is my favorite way of investing in the larger community. Watching people in the audience as they listen and paying close attention to the author's presentation helps me develop my skills.

    1. Hi Barbara! How lovely that your local library offers lectures like that. I've attended special sessions at a city library during an annual storytelling conference; I'll have to see if they ever bring in authors during the rest of the year.

      Thanks for sharing!

  2. Definitely have to be around other writers. I have writer friends in my home town that I connect with as often as possible. I am involved in online writers groups, and I attend conferences and workshops with other writers. I think it's a necessary part of the process. What happened at your Writer's Group meeting today?

    1. Hi Jackie. A few of our writers took a 300-word-or-less challenge that started from the prompt, "She started smoking when she turned 44." That was fun. Having a challenge seemed to encourage people to come. We also looked at an excerpt from some material I'd like to shape into a novel. We discussed how I might proceed. Several smaller conversations took place too, on how to get motivated and stay motivated, what our daily routines look like, etc. Thanks for asking!
